Immortalized human microvascular endothelial cells HCMEC/D3

The hCMEC/D3 cell line is derived from human temporal lobe microvessels, which are isolated from the resected tissues for epilepsy control. The main isolate was enriched in cerebral endothelial cells (CECs). In the first generation, human telomerase catalytic subunit (hTERT) and lentivirus vector of SV40 large T antigen were used to immortalize the cells, and then CEC was selectively isolated by limited dilution cloning to obtain extensive phenotypic characteristics of brain endothelium. This brain microvascular endothelial cell line represents a model of human blood-brain barrier. This model is easy to grow and can be used for the cellular and molecular research of pathology and drug transport mechanism related to the central nervous system (CNS). Hcmec/D3 is a stable and easy to grow blood brain barrier (BBB) model cell line. It is an ideal study of drug uptake and active transport, as well as understanding the response of brain endothelium to various human pathogens and inflammatory stimuli.
