Human brain microvascular endothelial cells

This cell originates from humans. Human brain microvascular endothelial cells constitute the primary component of the blood-brain barrier, restricting the passage of soluble substances and cells from the bloodstream into the brain. Compared to peripheral endothelial cells, brain microvascular endothelial cells share several characteristics. They possess numerous tight junctions between cells, creating high transendothelial resistance and delaying paracellular flux; They lack the fenestrated structure of peripheral endothelium, exhibit lower levels of fluid-phase endocytosis, and possess an asymmetrically localized enzyme and carrier-mediated transport system, resulting in a “polarized” phenotype. Like peripheral endothelium, brain microvascular endothelial cells express cell adhesion molecules on their surface, regulating leukocyte entry into the brain. Due to the organ specificity of microvascular endothelial cells, these cells are typically sourced from tissues relevant to the disease being studied.
