Calu-3 Human Lung Adenocarcinoma (pleural Effusion)

The cell line was established in 1975 in the metastatic site (pleural effusion) of a 25-year-old Caucasian man with lung adenocarcinoma. It is a non-small cell lung cancer cell line, which grows in adherent culture and presents epithelial morphology. Due to the amplification of ErbB2 gene, these cells have the constitutive activity ErbB2/Her2. They express wild-type EGFR and mutant K-Ras (G13D). In addition, they also have mutations in TP53 and CDKN2A genes. Calu-3 cells are sensitive to erlotinib (EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor) and cetuximab (a monoclonal antibody that blocks the binding of ligand with EGFR and blocks downstream signal transduction), two commonly used drugs targeting ErbB receptor. These cells can form tumors in immune deficient mice. It was identified as free of mycoplasma/STR and put into storage.
