Calu-1 Human Lung Cancer Cell

The cell line was established in 1971 from the metastatic site (pleura) of pulmonary epidermoid carcinoma in a 47-year-old white male. Calu-1 is a non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell line, which grows in adherent culture and has epithelial morphology. These cells expressed wild-type LKB1, wild-type EGFR and mutant K-Ras (G12C). In addition, they lack the expression of p53 (homozygous deletion) and FHIT (fragile histidine triad) tumor suppressor proteins. Calu-1 cells are inherently resistant to erlotinib, an EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor used to treat patients with NSCLC. It can form tumors in mice with low immune function.
