NPC/HK1 human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells

A long-term cell culture epithelioid cell line was established from a Chinese male nasopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma which recurred 17 and a half years after radiotherapy. The cell line, named NPC/HKI, has been passed 72 times in a year. Light and electron microscopy showed that these cells belonged to squamous epithelial type. When they were subcutaneously transplanted to the back of BALB/c (nu/nu) in nude mice, the tumor occurred at the inoculation site. Histological examination showed that they were well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, and their morphology was similar to that of recurrent human tumors derived from them. The karyotype analysis of the cell line showed that the number of model chromosomes of aneuploid human type was 74, with quantitative and structural aberrations. No virus particles or Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen (EBNA) has been found in the cells cultured in primary culture or several times of test passage.
