HEp-2 Human Laryngeal Cancer Cells

The HEp-2 cell line contains HeLa-labeled chromosomes. Initially, it was thought to originate from laryngeal epidermoid carcinoma, but subsequent isoenzyme analysis, HeLa-labeled chromosomes, and DNA fingerprinting revealed that the origin cells had been contaminated with HeLa. Keratin immunoperoxidase staining is positive. This cell line may be contaminated with HELA. STR typing results for HEp-2 were consistent with HELA (partial homology). PCR confirmed that this cell line was positive for human papillomavirus DNA sequences.
