AU565 [AU-565] human breast cancer cell

Human breast cancer cells AU565 [AU-565] are epithelioid cell lines isolated from pleural effusion in a 43-year-old white woman with breast cancer. These cells originated from the same patient as the breast cancer cell SK-BR-3 (CD0056), who had type A blood and had received radiotherapy, steroids, cyclophosphamide, and 5-fluorouracil. These cells highly express the oncogene HER-2/neu, as well as oncogenes HER-3, HER-4, and p53. AU565 cells can induce cell differentiation through the TA-1 monoclonal antibody regimen of mycophenolic acid (MPA), phoproxate (PMA), retinic acid (RA), or HER-2/neu extracellular domains. Treatment of AU565 cells with neural differentiation factor (NDF) also induces mature phenotypes with morphological changes. Untreated AU565 cells have dense nuclei and thin cytoplasm, while treated cells exhibit morphologies associated with differentiated phenotypes, such as flattened large nuclei surrounded by a considerable cytoplasm. These cells can be used for cell growth models and differentiation studies in breast cancer.
