RIN-5F rat pancreatic islet β-cell tumor cells

RIN-5F is a β-cell line isolated from the rat pancreas, derived as a clone from the rat pancreatic islet cell line RIN-m. RIN-5F cells produce and secrete insulin and express L-dopa decarboxylase (a marker indicating cellular capacity for amino precursor uptake and decarboxylation, or APUD activity). Unlike its parent line, this cell does not produce somatostatin. The parent line was further cloned to yield Rin-14B, which produces somatostatin. RIN-5F cells serve as a model for studying the biology of pancreatic islet cells, particularly the mechanisms governing the synthesis, storage, and secretion of insulin and somatostatin.
